Do link back programs such as Link Assistant hurt the way search engines, Google, score websites? Even while using strict policy keeping common link backs relevant to the topic at hand, these old school practices seem to have a negative effect on the way search engines score website placement.

Do you have any data or examples to prove this? I was just going to implement a program like this with one of my under-performing sites in an effort to get deep links. Don’t want to do so if you can show an example on where this was a bad idea.
